Analyis of the race

An intriguing beginners' chase, but in the end it was pretty easy for last season's smart novice hurdler GONE TO LUNCH, who had been placed in decent events of this nature at Exeter on his first two starts of the season. Soon in front and jumping soundly, he stepped up the pace turning into the back straight on the second circuit and stayed on much too well for his only serious pursuer. This was pleasing and he remains on course for the Royal & SunAlliance Chase, although the four-miler at the festival might be a suitable alternative for this out-and-out stayer.

The Cool Guy, a former very useful novice hurdler, had seemed set to win a novice chase at Fakenham in February 2007 only to fall at the last when clear, sustaining a leg injury which has kept him off the track until now. He jumped well enough and moved into second early on the final circuit, but weakened three out and made a bad blunder at the next, followed by a less serious one at the final fence when well beaten. He looked to blow up and could be a different proposition with the run behind him.

Runner-up from out of the handicap over 2m3f here last week, Roseville faced an impossible task on these terms. Off The Shelf won an Irish point back in May but was out of his depth on this debut under rules.
